And it wasn't easy to watch all this unfold and I was there every second of it...so, it wasn't like I was just ignoring him and eating bon-bons on my butt in another room! But, it feels so good to have had it all happen the way that it did and now (I just posted an update), things are fine. The stress is gone and we are breathing without heavy chests!

Wow, I thought my experience with the tv and my kids was bad!!! It was nothing compared to this. This story has totally given me the belief that unschooling can work. You were so strong to let E take it to its natural conclusions, what a great boy. Others would have wavered long before, denying a child the right to make up his own mind.
What with this and the food post, I know that I am on the right track when all around me say, "You are letting them walk all over you."

You know, TV can be a real issue for some people, especially those who have grown up with limitations, rewards and punishments which involved TV. I really wanted to get to the bottom of our situations since TV wasn't ever really controlled.

We've talked some more since the TV was removed and apparently, E had just developed a deep fondness for a few different shows and like adults who have 'their shows', he was intensely into them. Just like with anything that children can be intensely into, it can be hard for them to remember to eat, get a drink, go to the bathroom sometimes and get some sleep...who wants to stop or interrupt playing a great game with the neighbor kid just to eat for 10 minutes?

Things have been going extremely well. E hasn't mentioned his TV or wanting to watch it for two days now. Now, I am wondering how, when or if it should be returned to his room. Right now feels way to soon and I'd hate to set him up for possible failure. But, I am sure that at some time he might want it back and might be able to use it more consciously. I really don't see a reason to ask him...I figure when he's ready, he'll request it.

Wow- that is huge :0) What a brilliant child (and relationship)you have. My dh was controlled with tv (everything actually) and he still struggles to turn it off when there is nothing interesting on. I am not at all for making rules to avoid the kind of scenes you've described...so much better if a child makes the connection for himself (about tv, or sleep, or food, or anything at all).

awesome and thanks for sharing Marina! Adults figure these things out on their own or with loving support and advice from friends and family, why not children? Obviously, we are here to guide and keep our children from experiencing true danger or damage, but some things are best learned in an environment that is safe, supportive and loving, you know?

That sounds amazing...we are going through this with pop right now. My children are free to spend their money how they see fit and for the past 6 months that has been on pop. They are noticing it keeps them up at night and my oldest watched a documentary on the corn farmers and high fructose corn syrup and diabetes and weight issues!!! He is re-thinking this.
