[...] Last week I mentioned that we had a kind of crappy introduction to a new (new to us) homeschooling playgroup. We returned this week on Tuesday and had a much better time of it. I took my Dear Other Half for reinforcement Elijah did have a chaperon practically the whole time — the “church lady” (who turns out to actually be really nice). A lot of the kids don’t like to just sit and be engrossed in one thing for too long, so they run off to do something else. This isn’t a big thing in the grand scheme of things, but for E, it is pure hell. He gets pissed and fed up with trying to keep up. What can I say, I’ve got a child who likes to immerse himself in long lasting really deep play. William talking to T.; Elijah eating a grape Group of younger boys & E hanging out Hula hooping The chase to keep up is on... [...]

I feel you here. My family and I aren't inclined to join groups ( I generally only tolerate people well when I'm working or with my family) but my older daughter loves to play with kids, especially older kids. So we mingle with people, and sometimes those other people aren't very nice! My husband is teaching her to push back. As a bullied kid myself, I think its great advice. My mom is horrified, but I know ignoring it (her advice when I was a kid) or getting a teacher doesn't make it stop.

Wait, I'm digressing. People are annoying. And people have gotten more annoying, especially when it comes to their kids. But this is your blog, not mine, so I will just end this by saying I'm really enjoying reading your blog and I hope one of these days we connect, maybe at one of your unschooling hangouts!

Aww, yeah that doesn't sound like the greatest day... I sympathize entirely with Elijah! I was about to say that joining groups for the first time has gotten easier as I got older, but that's not really true. I found that difficult when I was Elijah's age, and I still find it difficult now! Hopefully things will go better next week, whether you decide to stay or not.
