hair cut & weekly blog schedule

So, I cut Elijah’s hair last night. Some of you know how crazy that is. See, Elijah doesn’t like his hair touched AT ALL and will only give me permission to cut it about once ever six or eight months. He’ll usually let me tend to it more frequently than that to split apart dreadlocks and find missing Legos (totally kidding!!!!). However, it’s been about a year since I’ve been allowed to touch his head. It’s been a little hard for me, but I respect my kiddo and his body – it’s not MY hair after all, you know.

We’ve been talking about cutting it for the last six months. I had envisioned it short, but not as short as it is. I had envisioned that he’d still have dreadlocks and everything, but that we’d just cut it short and separate everything out. The last three months had lots of talk of mohawks. Elijah has decided that he wanted to cut it, but that he wanted a mohawk down the middle and his two favorite dreadlocks in the front left uncut.

Apparently last night was the night. We sat down and started to cut. First, I got rid of the solid locked matting on the back of his neck, which had been giving him some pain – I think this is what finally led him to allow me to cut his hair. We talked about the mohawk and I sectioned his hair in such a away to make it happen. Once I got to the top of his head and was cutting the locks down for the mohawk, Elijah said, “I don’t want a mohawk anymore; just cut it all off except for Brother and Sister”. ‘Brother and Sister’ are what he named his two dreadlocks in the front – those are special to him and I doubt that they will ever be cut by anyone.

So, it all got cut off and then I went back over his head and cut the remaining stubs really short. He’s happy, looks about a year older and according to his ‘Uncle’ Taz, he looks like a Hebrew Lakota. I think he’s beautiful regardless of what’s going on, on his head :-)

Pictures of before and after can be found here.

I wanted to make a note about how my week for blogging is shaping up. I think it’s going to look something like this:

Sunday – free association with ten words. it’s fun and gets my brain working. you should play along.
Monday – I’ll be posting 100 random things about myself for the next ten weeks and then after that we’ll see what happens…
Tuesday – Regular blogging about Life, the Universe and Everything.
Wednesday – Wordless Wednesdays has always intrigued me and will force me to use my camera at least once a week. Play along, please.
Thursday – Regular blogging about Life, the Universe and Everything.
Friday – Friday Fill-In.
Saturday – Is my day of gratitude blogging and I invite you to share what you are grateful for as well.

On days when there is a meme/meme-like thing planned, I might double post, as Life, the Universe and Everything does happen on those days as well. But, I’m employing the help of memes for the time being to aid in my desire to blog something every day.

one hundred things – part 1

I thought that I’d do a random 100 Things About Me meme to kill some time on Mondays. I really want to keep blogging every day, but on some days, I have little inspiration for things to blog about or I can’t/don’t want to share what’s going on in my world. So, unless something fabulous or Earth shattering happens on meme days, a meme is what you’ll get. It could be worse folks – long time readers know how I can miserably go on bitching about things…

But, this does mean that it’s a possibility that I will post more than once on meme days. It IS a possibility… stop shaking your head!

So, over the next 10 weeks, every Monday you’ll get 10 random things about me.

***************

1. What was the last thing you threw into a trashcan? A random little piece of blue styrofoam; possibly it was from a mushroom carton thingy.
2. When was the last time you ate cake, and what sort of cake was it? Well, the official day of eating cake was Friday, in celebration of a friend’s birthday and it was Thai Tea Cake. However, I had another piece of it on Saturday.
3. Do you believe in reincarnation? What were you in a former life? Yes – it’s hard to deny given that I have vivid memories and physical (almost limbic) responses to certain situations similar to those in past lives. I’ve been many things and many different things to many people, but being a mermaid was the best!
4. What is the closest object to your left hand? My left hand! Oh, you wanted me to say, “the keyboard”.
5. A friend calls you up and says, “Hey, me and some of my buddies are headed your way for a . Can we crash at your place Saturday night?” What do you say… yes; no; depends on how many people they’re bringing? Despite what you’d tell this friend of yours, if you made the effort, how many people could you accommodate for a one-night sleep over? More than likely I’d say yes. But only for the one night, and if some of them didn’t mind sleeping on the floor. We could easily house a small army – about a dozen w/ six of them on beds/bed-like objects. Well, actually, we could find floor space for more than six, so maybe even more than a dozen. We could probably manage an insane two dozen extra people for one night, but I’d need a couple bottles of wine and a huge spliff to make it through – just saying…
6. Quick, I need to suggest a book for my guys & gals book club. What title should I assign to everyone to read (for the month of June)? Bunnicula, by James Howe. Yes, I realize it’s a children’s book, but it’s a fantastic commentary on human behavior – how we jump to conclusions based on very little information. One of my favorite books and one that I’ve read several times as a child and as an adult. I’ve also enjoyed several of the other books in the series, which might be good for your book club as well since most people could read Bunnicula in an hour.
7. If you were asked by a toothpaste manufacturer to come up with a new flavor, what would be your top three suggestions? 1.) as flavorless as possible 2.) lavender-hemp 3.) chrysanthemum-chamomile. (my g-d, I am truly a hippie. I guess I might as well have said, “dirt, grass & clouds”)
8. When you’re on a horse farm and you want to get a horse’s attention, you make a clicking sound with your mouth. What sort of sound would I need to make to get your attention? The crunch of walking on dry Autumn leaves. The whirring of an espresso machine making the perfect cappuccino.
9. What would the US postal stamp commemorating you and your life portray? I’d rather not answer this one… or maybe I just need to think about it for awhile longer.
10. I’m headed to the grocery store. Is there anything I can get for you? Onions, mustard, bagels, vegan cream cheese, bok choy, chard, leeks and chocolate. Actually, I’d rather just go myself, but thanks a lot, Love. Maybe I can ride with you?

>>>look for 10 more random things about me next Monday.<<<

Major in the Universe – I totally want to trade in my majors for majoring in the Universe… just saying.

10.) String – theory – only because i was just talking to Elijah about String Theory.

gratitude blog 02.19.11

I think I’m going to make Saturdays ‘gratitude blog day’. I figure I can list seven things that I am grateful for – not necessarily one for each day of the week, it’s just that seven is a good number for me. If you feel like joining me, please do and you can link to your post in the comments. Also, if you have some other form of weekly gratitude blog and want to share, leave a link in the comments.

friday fill-in

Friday Fill-in

1. New experiences and possibilities are what make our lives exciting and worth living.

2. It’s entirely possible that an unexpected turn on a daily walk could lead you down a different street, full of people and places just waiting for you.

3. I’m looking forward to really living, with my full self – so far, even when it sucks, it just feels better.

4. Being able to say how we feel and express what we need feels awesome, but it’s an awesome that I would never have imagined.

5. Try to find something magical in each day – I promise there’s plenty to choose from.

6. My ability to bounce back and just keep on giving is what’s extraordinary about me.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to spending time with a friend & her family while we celebrate her birthday, tomorrow my plans include hanging out with another friend (we’re going to make collages) and Sunday, I want to take advantage of extra snuggling time since I don’t have to get up early to kidsit!
