soup’s up & pink floyd teaches about education

I made soup today.

1lb or 2.5 C cooked lentils
3/4 C cooked brown rice
3/4 C thinly sliced carrot
1 leek, thinly sliced (about a cup)
1/2 a medium sized onion, diced
garlic (I’d suppose as much as you like, I would have used 3 or 4 cloves, but saved it for another meal and used 1 TBS of garlic powder instead)
12 oz mushrooms sliced (any mushrooms will do; I had crimini)
4 C veggie broth
3 C water (or all your liquid could be broth)
1/2 TBS sea salt
1 tsp cracked pepper
olive oil

saute onion, leek & garlic in olive oil. when those are almost translucent, toss in carrots, mushrooms, salt & pepper and cover & continue to cook all that down.

add the rest and bring to a boil. serve with some yummy bread, toast or crackers – i’m making me a sandwich on the side.

enjoy.

Elijah had a revelation about education:

Elijah: hey, what’s that song, ‘we don’t need no education’?
Me: I’ll look it up for you.
E: but, we do need education!
E: (after watching the video) okay, maybe not that kind of education!

thank you, Pink Floyd.

I was unawares about a cult phenomenon around ‘alot’ until my Dear Other Half showed me the light and I read this blog post. I knew that it is quite common for people to misspell ‘a lot’, but I had no idea that the misspelling has been personified in a sense…  The Internet is a beautiful place.

thank you to those who made my birthday week great; especially when it wasn’t so great & i needed to cry.

hoping this week holds all kind of greatness.

birthday week 2011 – day 7 (wind down & linky love)

Today is the last day of my birthday week. I’m winding down.

Going to clean up Legos off the floor so that the almost one year old that I kidsit for tomorrow doesn’t try to eat them.

I see that doing dishes are in my near future.

It’s another beautiful Winter day; currently it’s 38 degrees F and bright and sunny. Almost feels like early Spring.

Unschooling parents are lazy

And so what if we are?

Speaking of ‘Unschooling’, if you are looking for nuggets to strew or you are just looking for a new blog with cool things, try over here.

Desecration (remember, there’s roll-over text people)

Also, Thaddeus Russell’s book, A Renegade History of the United States, came up in a Facebook conversation. Open your mind, drop your white progressive liberal pc politics for a minute and read it.

And then, if you still want something else to read, but are looking for something not so serious, try:  A Dictionary of Modern Slang, Cant, and Vulgar Words: Used At the Present Day in the Streets of London (1860), by John Camden Hotten

And, last but definitely not least, go check out my Dear Other Half‘s Flickr sets.

unschooling these days

“[shrug] I just do my best to help them shine their divine, sparkly Light.” ~ Ordinary Life Magic: on teaching

“When school is gone, life will be left.” ~ Just Add Light and Stir

I’ve written *A LOT* about Unschooling on this here blog in the past. There’s still more to be said, I’m sure!

These days our unschooling looks a lot like:

Stjepan Hauser and Luka Sulic – Smooth Criminal which did lead to this Michael Jackson – Smooth Criminal
Homestar Runner
American Parkour and Russian Ninjas, Russian Climbing Ninja, Parkour in Latvia
Wednesday
Kina in South America!
Uriel Fury
Lego Board Games
Note Cards (lots of those)
Weird and crazy math problems made up for me to solve (yeah, because I have *nothing* better to do)
Countless “Let’s Play” videos on YouTube.com
Wikipedia (so much so, that we’re HIGHLY considering purchasing this)
Little Big Planet on the PS3
People (new friends, old friends, mum & dad’s new friends)
Oh Yeah!
And Food… narrowing down what it is that E doesn’t like while prodding to see what he *does* like

And of course there’s more, there always is more and more and more. It’s all life and no school. It’s Winter too – would be nice to be able to leave the house and not have to freeze. Speaking of freezing, these look cozy, but not nearly as effing cute as these (and those are made by grown unschooler, Dagny Kream).

Those of you still wanting more information on Unschooling can email me, find me on Facebook or just start reading here.

NEUC, CSA Apology and Stuff

…though, not in that order.

I’ve been hanging out at the Lawrenceville Little Flea on Saturdays; selling my handmade wares. It’s a really neat community of interesting people and there are always cool finds and friends to make. Things get started a 9am and end at 4pm. Yinz should think about stopping by, digging through old books, buying handmade clothing, sampling tasty food, hearing live music and maybe learning the secret handshake for some homemade sangria (shhh…).

I have many deep and real apologies for NOT sticking to the promise to do better this year over last year in posting about our CSA share each week. The middle of August happened and nothing has helped me get back on track. I skipped taking pictures a few weeks, missed a pick-up and was out of town a week…so, I’m REALLY behind. I make no promises as to when or if I will get back on track (though I really hope I do).

At the end of August we were away in Wakefield/Boston, MA for the Northeast Unschooling Conference. It rocked. I got to meet Jeff Sabo and Ren Allen in the flesh, which was awesome. William and I spent a few really late nights with Ren and Erika Davis-Pitre laughing so much that we were in pain. I got to spend some time talking with Jon Kream (and STILL need to send him information about how to make a forge out of a double stainless steel sink — he’s going to make a sword with Rowan!). I have pictures to upload from three different cameras…I’ll get there people.

Besides Elijah losing yet another tooth (this makes eight) and the fact that he’ll be 7 years old on the 18th, I think that’s about all for now, n’at.

Interview!

I was interviewed recently by the Harrisburg Homeschooling Examiner. If you’d like to read the interview, you’ll find it here http://www.examiner.com/homeschooling-in-harrisburg/radical-unschooler-of-pennsylvania
