3rd CSA of 2010

So, this was today (week three) of our CSA from Penn’s Corner

2010CSA-3

Third CSA Share (21 more to go)

Garlic Scapes
Radicchio
Patty Pan Squash
Red Romain
Strawberries
Snow Peas
Green Head Lettuce
Celery
Thyme
Scallions

Also*
Turnips w/ Greens
Bag of Salad Mix
12+ Baby Carrots w/ Greens
Arrowhead Cabbage
Broccoli
Mystery Greens (I believe they are young Collard Greens)

* some of those listed under ‘Also’ were substituted in place of the half dozen eggs that non-vegan shares get AND apparently, after making a complaint about my bag of salad mix from last week being sub-par, I got a lot of things to replace them and to make up for them being crappy. PCFA gets my vote so far for Best Pittsburgh CSA!

1st & 2nd CSA of 2010

This year, we decided to try a different CSA arrangement. The last two years we had been using Kretschmann’s Farm, but this year, we’re using Penn’s Corner Farmer Alliance. The following pictures are of the first two CSA shares of the season.

2010CSA-1

First CSA Share (23 more to go)

Rome Apples
Red Leaf Lettuce
Black Seeded Lettuce
Scallions
Cabbage
Beet Greens (with a couple incredibly freaking cute tiny baby beets)
Strawberries
Sugar Snap Peas
French Tarragon
Stir-Fry Greens Mix

2010CSA-2

Second CSA Share (22 more to go)

Red & Green Kale
Red Leaf Lettuce
Arrowhead Cabbage
Bag of Salad Mix
8 Baby Carrots w/ Greens Attached
Shelling Peas
Strawberries
Oregano
Chives
Cilantro

The Asparagus, Broccoli and Acini de pepe ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acini_di_pepe ) were all purchased at the Bellevue Farmer’s Market down the street from the CSA pick-up point.

Hopefully, this year, I can keep up with posting about what we get and possibly how I use some of it.

Catching Up: A Monkey Platter & Affogato

It’s been awhile since I posted a picture of a monkey platter. Elijah has been eating more of “our” food and not grazing as much as usual. I’ve also just not been taking pictures of his food…frankly, “the lazy” has been working for me lately. I like “the lazy”.

It’s been awhile since we’ve stopped in at one of our favorite coffeeshop, Affogato. Too long of awhile.

There will not be a 13th CSA, because we will be out of town in Massachusettes for the Northeast Unschooling Conference. When we get back, we’ll be picking up the 14th CSA…just a note, so that you all don’t think I forgot how to count! Oh, and in case you wonder what will happen to our crate of goodness while we are gone…this time, Hoi Polloi will pick it up and use it to make nummy food for you — go eat it or at least have a cup of coffee!

Backyard Gardening

Filed under: Grub,Life,Photographs,Pittsburghian — Tags: , , , , , , — michele james-parham @ 2:04 pm

Well, it’s been not quite a month since the last update on my little fledgling of a garden. Where I once had tomato plants, I now have tomato trees!

yay, were huge, but we dont have any tomatoes...

Im getting big and I might just make a zucchini after all

the slugs have eaten almost all my leaves, but I have this one lone pepper for you, but you might need to pick it soon, because it threatens to topple me over

sorry Im so small, but tomorrow youll see both my flowers open and a bee flitting about both of them -- I promise to make you a baby acorn squash

Sorry, about the quality of these pictures, but it was raining & I was shaking. The guys who were not pictured are still there, except for the Lime Basil, which was used for some pesto. The slugs have decimated my pepper plants. In fact, I picked about half a dozen off in order to not get them in the photographs!

This year I have two things working against me with the garden (besides the slugs)…I didn’t get seedlings into the ground until about one month AFTER I should have, but I didn’t want to worry about things being trampled when we had our huge ice cream, jazz, waterballoon & champagen party. The second thing is that I haven’t seen that many bees. This is mainly due to the fact that I don’t have a lot growing this year in the garden or the yard. But, with a little luck, when we get back from the Northeast Unschooling Conference, we’ll have some baby tomatoes & maybe a zucchini or two.

Elijah & Collin

Elijah & Collin

On Tuesday, we went to the Pittsburgh Children’s Museum (where one of the staff recognized me & mentioned that she loved my challenge that I sent the museum) with our neighbor and her grandson. We had a pretty good time and I got to spend some more time with my neighbor who is one hip lady!

Our neighbor said that they were going to go home, eat and then go to the store…once we were dropped off and getting food around for ourselves, Elijah said, “do you really think Collin wants to go to the store with his grandma…we should see if he can play Legos with me while she shops”. I called and it was a done deal; Collin skipped over after he ate dinner and the two boys played Legos, built with blocks and did a little drawing.

This is a perfect example of kindness & respect begetting kindness & respect…I know that I’ve mentioned before that Elijah doesn’t like going to the grocery store (or any major shopping place for that matter), because it is literally an assult on his senses. I arrange my shopping plans so that I get everything done on William’s days off, so that Elijah can stay home with him or so that they can be dropped off somewhere to hang out while I get business taken care of. Elijah thought it was only fair to extend that arrangement to his friend while our neighbor went shopping. I think it was a very kind & compassionate moment for Elijah — he didn’t want to see his friend have to endure (I’m assuming he thinks most kids are effected by stores the same way he is) going to the store when there was a clear option for him to avoid it.

I love my son :)
