Second CSA from Kretschmann Farm

I apologize now that I do not have a picture to share…I took pictures, but then sat my camera down and the house ate it! As soon as I am able to post the picture, I will — hopefully before we leave for our vacation on Monday! There are pictures for you now!

Here’s what was in our crate:

2 baskets Strawberries (so big and so good!)
1 bunch Flat Leaf Parsely
1 sm. bunch Kale
1 sm. head Broccoli
12 Radishes (good-sized)
1 bg. Spinach
1 bg. Spring Mix/Salad Greens
1 bg. Pea Greens (which are awesome, tangy & taste like peas!)
1 XLg. Red Leaf Lettuce
2 sm. Romain Lettuce

Once again we have lots of fantastic salad fodder. This past week has been incredibly hot and humid, but we have had a couple days of reprieve from the heat and humidity. Next week we won’t be getting our crate of ‘green goodness’, because we’ll be on vacation, but I am sure that whoever gets our share will be happy, no doubt!

If you want to know more about the farm our produce is hailing from, please refer to my first CSA post for links to the farm.

First CSA from Kretschmann Farm

CSA1-1

We received our first share from the farm. Here’s what was in our crate:

2 bgs Spring Mix/Salad Greens
1 lg. & 1 sm. Head of Bibb Lettuce
1 bg. Spinach
1 XLg. Kale Bunch
5 Radishes (good-sized)
1 bg. of Fresh Herbs (Oregano, Thyme and Sage)
20 oz. Loaf of 7 Grain Bread from Friendship Farm in the Laurel Highlands
1 oz. sample each of French Herb Chevre and Feta made of Goat’s milk from River View Dairy*

*we obviously didn’t ask for this since it’s not vegan, but I am sure that whoever gets it from us will be happy*

We have lots of fantastic salad fodder, which is good because it was too hot today to cook much! It’s 82, but feels like 87 and it’s almost 10PM! I can’t wait until next week or the week after when the broccoli and cauliflower are ready! We are excited and pleased all around.

I have more pictures here and here of the bounty.

Food: Hungry Mouths and Such

So, on a couple forums that I belong to, there has been some recent talk about what people eat in general, where they shop and how much it costs them. One person linked to a photo gallery of families around the world and what they eat for one week as well as what it costs them. Here is that link:

What the World Eats, Part II

What the World Eats, Part III

I do most, if not all of our grocery shopping every month. I usually have one really large shopping day (Trader Joe’s and East End Food Co-op) about mid month with maybe one or two little trips (Trader Joe’s, usually) in between. Keep in mind that we eat vegan, so there is no meat for us to buy; I cook every meal (usually from scratch); Almost everything is organic; We like to drink and we smoke — we can’t be perfect, you know!

For an entire month we usually spend:
$300 on edible/drinkable goods (generous amount)
$152 on produce (once a week organic goods delivered to our door)
$10 on non-edible goods (Toilet paper, cleaning stuff, tobacco [roll my own], etc.)
$10 on cat litter
$38 approx. on ground rabbit for our two cats’ food (we buy in bulk about every three months).
$60 on two cases of beer/cider!
$150 eating out twice (we have expensive taste, or rather like to drink when we eat out!)

Grand Total: $720 (pretty much eats up one of William’s paychecks)

So, what about you and your family’s grocery habits?

Boycotting: Monsanto a.k.a. The Devil

Now, me boycotting something is not new and neither is boycotting Monsanto (which is almost impossible unless you totally drop out, never buy another thing and eat only from your yard). However, when I see something that warrants being mentioned I have to pass it on. I never know when just the right article might make the light go on for someone else.
